True Brite Painting, Lewis’s new “company”

Our ol’ buddy is up to his old tricks again. His new company name is “True Brite Painting”. How do we know this? Another victim contacted us saying they wished they’d seen our page before doing business with him. In that person’s words:

He was to powerwash, caulk, and paint the entire house.

He did not caulk a thing that I could find as I still have all the same cracks in the siding and trim, he powerwashed about 1/8 of the front of the house and that was it. I guess I should feel extra lucky that he did finish painting the base color of my house. I have found lots of trim that he didn’t paint, but it was the same color so I didn’t notice until I paid him. Lots of overspray (door sills, etc). Did not paint behind the downspouts either.

Now he hangs up on me when I call and won’t take my call if he knows it’s me.

He wanted half the money up front and the other half when finished.

Sounds familiar, huh?

Copies of A(nother) Contract and Cashed Check…

Guess how much work Lewis did after cashing this check? If you guessed zero: Congratulations! You are right. The last picture is of the garage he was supposed to paint.

How Lewis Can Get this Blog Taken Down

At some point I expected Lewis to contact us, as we’ve offered a very clear guide to what it’ll take for us to remove this site. To clarify this further:

1: He must admit to cheating people out of money and apologize, publicly, including a promise to cease his swindling ways.
2: He must propose some method of reimbursing those that were scammed. It need not be in full or immediate.

If both steps above are taken to our satisfaction we’ll remove the blog and transfer the domain into Lewis M Benson’s name.

We also got both a contract and copy of a cashed check from another victim. It’ll be posted shortly.

Is Lewis Benson the Waldo Rapist?

No, no he’s not, we’re pretty sure that guy’s black. But after Nadia’s hack job in The Pitch we thought we’d learn a little about journalism and found the Fox News “passive aggressive wonderment” technique to appear pretty effective.

Why? Well, we decided to create a revenue stream to benefit those that lost money to Lewis’s scams. For that we needed more traffic, and the Waldo Rapist is hot as fish grease right now. So, without further ado, we’d like to introduce the Hipster Internet Vigilantee Tee-shirt!

That small text reads “I can haz money back now?” in trendy lolspeak!

It comes in S, M, L, XL, XXL and hipster slim sizes. $200/ea, free shipping! (It was economically impossible to sell them for less, we are sorry, but they may be a collectors item some day).

On Second Thought

What the hell, let’s see some checks!

Take note of the memos.

Check #1 says “Ext Paint”, which references the exterior paint job outlined by Lewis in this proposal

Check #2 says “Porch Repairs”, which references the porch repair job outlined by Lewis in this proposal

He fulfilled the terms of neither contract, yet cashed both checks.

In response to…

I received this email today via the ‘Contact Me’ widget that makes it ever so easy to send stuff anonymously:

From: Just Curious
Subject: Do you bother to verify complaints sent to you. Or is pulling claims from your ass evidence?

Message Body:
How do we know you arent just making this shit up? For all anyone knows, you are just writing these claims yourself. You seem like a major tool.

While I do have a very active imagination, these accusations are mos def not made up. I’ll refer you to a couple posts which point to real deal stuff:
Here’s some contracts:

Here’s some fun courtroom drama stuff for the kiddies!!

I suppose you’d like a screen shot of my cashed check next? Unfortunately, i’m not going to put that out here. But I would ask you this: Why the hell would a group of people go to such lengths as creating a webpage ‘on a whim’? That just wouldnt make sense. Would it?

Grab bag email #2:

From: U R Adick
Subject: Paint deez nutz

Message Body:
The Pitch has exxxposed you. You post the guys name and personal info, then ask to not have yours divulged. Fail.

You’re right. The Pitch really exposed me for being someone who doesnt like a ton of personal information out in the public! BURN!!!

The difference is that we’re not scamming people, so our personal information would only provide you with, well, random addresses and emails. While exposing LEWIS, that helps people avoid making the same mistake we made – hiring a dishonest person to do honest work.

This page was done for less than $25 and in less than 2 hours. If you’ve got such a vested interest in Mr. Benson’s reputation, start your own webpage. If you email me, i’ll gladly point you in the right direction. It’s so easy even a crooked general contractor could do it.

Lewis Benson Contracts

Here are some scans of the very detailed contracts provided by Lewis M Benson.  I’m sure it would have been a significantly easier decision if he’d written ‘I’ll take your money and then disappear, just like I did to several other people’ instead of all this complicated contractor-talk.

Take note of the fact that the first image proposes repair of  wood rot. He gave a detailed proposal, accepted payment, and completed exactly none of the work before changing his number and refusing to respond to emails. This doesn’t exactly sync well with what he told The Pitch.

This is an open and shut case of fraud, in any courtroom, anywhere…

Another Benson Remodeling/Fix All Remodeling scam

We received a submission from another victim of Lewis’s scam. Same story as the others….

He took me for $600 on a paint job for my garage and back porch. He said he’d be back the next day to start painting. The only thing I heard from him after that was a quick phone call later that week where a female claiming to be his wife said that he had spent the night in an emergency room due to the flu. My wife called him a couple times after that, but he hung up on her,and quickly changed his phone number.

He used the company name “Benson Remodeling”,phone number 816-405-3472, email bensonremodeling@yahoo.com, drove a white 1997 Ford Explorer and had a female “roommate” with him who was supposed to be helping, but mainly sat around in the vehicle. As far as I can tell, he used “Benson remodeling” as a name for about 3 years, and has recently changed to fix-all-remodeling.

As always, here are some pics of the work he didn’t do:

Lewis M Benson, Career Scumbag Since 1998

Since Mr. Benson hasn’t exactly covered his tracks well, one might suspect that he’s not that experienced with scamming people. I mean, really, he thinks he can hide by simply disconnecting a mobile phone number? That’s not exactly foolproof, especially when you’re responding to the same email account you’ve used in your scams. That said, he’s been doing this for a while and has a long list of cases filed against him (see images below).

Considering the fact that many victims wouldn’t bother with the effort and expense necessary to file a civil suit, we think it’s safe to estimate that he’s scammed a relatively large number of people. The average “take” of the victims we’ve heard from so far is around $1000. Multiply that by the 13 cases in Jackson and Johnson counties and you’ve got a decent chunk of change. Add to that all the people that didn’t file suit and you’ve got a career criminal who never shows up to court and doesn’t collect a paycheck that anyone can garnish. His credit report probably isn’t stellar, but when you’re stealing cash from suckers on Craigslist who cares, right?

Benson Remodeling, Lewis’s old “company”.

Funnily enough, “Benson Remodeling” was registered with the State of Missouri as a fictitious name in 2007. He stopped using it at some point late last year, I assume because word got out that he was a fraud.

This blog is a day old, yet we’ve already got 2 submissions from other victims. Here’s one:

I hired him to paint my house. I wouldn’t say I worked with him. He barely painted it and then took off with the money.
Below was a review I posted on Angies list.

Lewis was supposed to power wash, scrap all peeling paint, and paint the house white. It was later agreed to that he would cover the house in an anti peeling epoxy.
Member Comments:
I contacted lewis on craigs list. He seemed like a legit painter and came out to give me a quote just a couple of days later. The price was excellent for what he promised (originally agreed to 800 to repaint the house in the existing color). He required half up front and half upon completion. He started power washing the same day but got pulled away for some random reason and didn’t come back for a few days. When he came back to start painting he claimed my house needed a anti peeling epoxy due to the age of the house. I agreed and paid another 400 bucks for the additional work. When lewis returned a few days later he again worked for about 30 minutes and then had a personal issue he had to leave to attend to. I was very understanding that things like this happen but it was starting to get to be a common occurrence. On the 4th day Lewis showed up he again worked for about 30-40 minutes and then came to me and claimed he had ran out of paint. He needed to go get some more from Home Depot. He then gave me this sob story about how he left his check book at home which was 45 minutes away and he needed the last half of the payment to cover the paint (he already had 800 bucks of mine at this point). He said he was leaving his painting gear behind the house so I would know that he’s coming back. Needless to say Lewis never returned. His “gear” that he left was just an extension cord. He won’t return any of my calls and hangs up on me if I call from an unknown number. It cost me 5 bucks to write this review as I was not previously a member of angies list. I just want to hopefully keep this from happening to someone else who perhaps comes across this joke of a painter. Beware and run away..

The attached pictures are examples of his wonderful work..
